cdpeace | Centre for Development and Peace Education ~ Committed to a culture of peace and sustainability in Sierra Leone

Welcome to cdpeace!

The co-founders Dr. Thomas Mark Turay and Mrs. Mary Hawa Turay

cdpeace is a rural community-based non-profit organization established in Sierra Leone in 1992 by Dr. Thomas Mark Turay and Mrs. Mary Hawa Turay.

The Honorable Dr. Thomas Mark Turay died suddenly, Saturday September 5, 2015 in Makeni. A burial and ceremony of remembrance was held at the site of cdpeace, the Centre for Development and Peace Education, on September 20th in Mayagba. A memorial was held in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, on October 3. Mary Turay returned to her Canadian home in Antigonish during December 2015 and then returned January 5 to Sierra Leone to resume the work of cdpeace.

Operations of the organization were disrupted during the war but the founders kept the spirit of cdpeace alive while they were studying in Canada. With the joint effort of the founders, the local communities in Paki–Masabong and Gbonkolenken Chiefdoms, international organizations, institutions, and individuals working together, cdpeace was revived in 2004. cdpeace is now internationally recognized for facilitating networking relationships among organizations and peaceful school communities in Canada and Sierra Leone, and for providing support to organize and implement programs in community development, community health, and peace education in rural Sierra Leone. During the Ebola crisis, the efforts of cdpeace and its founders focused primarily on convincing people to change common habits and practices in order to prevent the spread of the disease.  Read more About cdpeace.
